From Elsewhere: Wither Pride marches?

There’s a brilliant article by Sean Atkinson about the purpose of Pride marches in the modern day. Once they were places and events where LGB people called for equality but now that equality has mostly been reached what are they for? Mr Atkinson seems to see Prides as I see them now which is not as places for normal LGB’s but places primarily for the hard core of TQ activists where Gay men, Bisexuals and Lesbians are often made unwelcome and who are effectively silenced.

Mr Atkinson’s article is really good. Here is one excerpt:

“While I was at pride, a gay man in his 50s approached me and thanked me for speaking up on these issues. He explained to me that he has been heavily involved in the movement for most of his life, and can’t risk speaking up himself because he risks losing the only community he has. He also said to me that he felt betrayed by the movement, that there was no room for him to speak about his concerns with migration, or the fact that he feels it was hijacked by the TQ++.
Whether people agree or disagree with those concerns isn’t the point. The point is that most are afraid to voice them at all because the movement that claims to represent them brands them as bigots once they do.
LGBT spaces are the one place they feel least comfortable speaking honestly.
And then the movement asks itself why so many gays are moving to the right. AFD and Reform for example have become largely popular with gay men.

The reasoning isn’t that complicated. When people stop feeling represented, they don’t disappear. They leave.
That’s the story of modern Pride, it has become so absorbed by radical activist politics to the point it struggles to represent the people it was built to serve.”
