12’’ live edge bowl

Hello all, today I would like to show you some art wood work. This was made by a guy I work with from time to time. I have been telling him about steemit and how he can show his work on here. Here is the first piece of wood art I would like to show you.

Look at the amazing colors in the wood.

I like how it still has the bark on the edge.

This thing would look great as a center piece on anyone’s table.

It almost looks like the wood is transparent.

Here is a little of what he had to do to make this bowl.

12" live edge bowl crafted from a Box Elder burl. It sits on a painted black maple stem 8" tall. The top half was rough turned on a Rockwell Delta wood lathe and then placed in a paper bag with wood shavings to dry for a couple weeks. The wood shavings help slow down the dry time to hopefully eliminate any warping or cracking in the wood. After the wood reached about 15% moisture content it was turned down to its finished size. Immediately after turning was complete, I stained the wood with a natural stain three times to once again slow down it's drying and prevent cracks. The vessel was finished with high gloss spar varnish to give the wood UV protection and eliminate the loss of the natural red fungus that grows within the fibers of the Box Elder wood. Finally the base was adhered to the bowl. The finished product sat for 72 hours to fully cure.
