Three Tunes From Cheech
I smiled at the thought of another Tuesday afternoon. This time no bomb drills or fire drills. It's just a bright sunny afternoon and my mind went wandering back to LA the times of Cheech Martin and Tommy Chong. I loved the Sister Mary Elephant skit and a few more classics. They had a connection and kept it going.
I've got three Cheech songs for Tuesday. I hope you enjoy the show.
Me and My Old Lady - Cheech and Chong
Here in the movie "Things are Tough All Over" Cheech and Tommy are stranded in the desert. They wanted to hitch hike a ride out but no cars are in sight.
To help the time pass Tommy starts strumming some chords and Cheech makes up the lyrics. From the looks of it they just made up the lyrics on the spot. They were in their forties but made songs like teenagers. I would like to do the same. I don't think Peyote is the answer.
Earache my Eye - Cheech and Chong
This is a classic seventies skit from Cheech and Chong. I think the Beastie Boys stole this basic rift even though it is just three chords.
The performance here is from the movie "Up in Smoke". You can see from even a few minutes why the seventies seem to be lost in history, kind of up in smoke.
The whole song seems to be a parody of the era's glam rock. Posers were up on stage, but the difference here is that he is honest about being a poser, which makes his material classic.
Born in East LA - Cheech Martin
A few years later Cheech writes this as a spin off of Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA". Again the song in the video is for a movie "Born in East LA". Cheech "Richard Anthony" wasn't actually born in East LA, but close enough.
The lyrics crack me up. I think this generation needs more parody. People are starting to take things too seriously.
"I looked up, a sign said five billion sold..."
Enjoy your Groovy Tuesday^^
