MES Math Q/A 66: What are Gauss's Laws for Electricity and Magnetism?
Gauss's law states that the divergence of the electric field is proportional to the electric charge density. This means electric field lines diverge away from positive charges and converge towards negative charges. Gauss's law for magnetism states that the divergence of the magnetic field is zero everywhere, so magnetic field lines form closed loops; hence magnetic monopoles should not exist. If they did, the law would have to be modified to include a magnetic charge density term, making it directly analogous to Gauss's law for electricity.
