MES Math Q/A 63: What is the Aharonov-Bohm Effect?

The Aharonov–Bohm effect is a quantum phenomenon in which a charged particle’s wavefunction acquires a measurable phase shift when the particle travels through a region where the magnetic field is zero but encloses a confined magnetic flux.

In the standard magnetic version, two coherent charged-particle beams pass along different paths around the flux, and when they recombine, the resulting interference pattern is shifted by an amount determined by the enclosed magnetic flux.
