Electrolysis is the use of a direct electric current to drive a nonspontaneous chemical reaction in an electrolyte, which conducts electricity by the movement of ions. Oxidation, which is the loss of electrons, occurs at the anode, and reduction, which is the gain of electrons, occurs at the cathode.
