The Value of Uncomfortable Conversations

Tomorrow is going to be an interesting day, to say the least.

On Hive Thrive, we are going to be joined by @igormuba, a long-time Hive user who has recently been making quite a bit of noise across the blockchain.

The subject, of course, will be his current focus: the DHF, and more specifically, the proposal outlined in his pull request.

It is my sincere hope that tomorrow's conversation, as intense as it may get, keeps at its center the fact that we are simply a group of passionate people trying to solve the same problem. We may disagree on the solution. We may disagree on the path to get there. But I believe we very much agree that our blockchain needs a shake-up. It needs a shift.

Unlike debates on Web2, there are reasonable fears and reservations people carry when speaking too loudly or too aggressively against the way things currently are. The social nuances of Hive, with its reputation system, political underpinnings, and questionable pool-protection protocols, elevate the consequences to another level.

We all know this. We all think about it.

That is why it is difficult not to notice when someone throws caution to the wind, fully aware of the friction and stress it will likely bring into their life.

Precisely because of this, I feel we ought to be grateful for dissenting voices. Those people who, for better or worse, are not content to simply play along and feel compelled to speak up.

I'd go as far as saying that their role in this experiment of ours is not only welcome, it is necessary.

Hive has a tendency to reward those who dance precisely to the tune playing on the jukebox while casting judgment on those who dare ask whether the right song is being played in the first place.

This is no secret. For years, a reliable formula for reaching Trending was to write bullish things about Hive, although these days those posts seem few and far between. Most of us struggle to maintain a positive mindset, and I'm not blaming anyone or pointing fingers.

If we are lucky, tomorrow's conversation might move the needle a little.

I happen to think the needle needs moving, which is why I welcome these uncomfortable discussions. But I'm open to being convinced that I'm wrong, of course.

I'm a fallible hairless ape, after all.
