A Chicago garden stroll

This beautiful structure is the brick pavilion (or summerhouse) located within the Helen and Richard Thomas English Walled Garden at the Chicago Botanic Garden.

Conceived by legendary British landscape designer John Brooke's, the English walled garden showcases a variety of classic English gardening styles.
The circular windows (oculi) on the side walls are designed to act as architectural "frames," capturing and highlighting specific vistas of the surroundings as you look through them.

Another of the highlights in the English walled garden are the classic balustrades and dry-stone retaining walls that John Brookes used to divide the garden into distinct levels and intimate "rooms."

In the above photo along the stone steps, you see a collection of container plants—including potted Allium and neatly trimmed topiaries that add vertical interest to the path. Vines and climbing roses enhance the stonework and demonstrate the classic English style of blending rigid architectural with lush flora.
