Basic Guide to FreeCAD Document Structure

All the elements in your scene are contained in a FreeCAD document. It may include collections and items produced on any workbench. As a result, you can change workstations while continuing to edit the same file. When you save your work, the document is what is saved to disc. FreeCAD also allows you to open several views of the same project and multiple documents at once.

The objects inside the document have individual names and can be grouped. The Tree view is where most management of groups, items, and object names is done. Of course, like anything else in FreeCAD, it can also be done using the Python interpreter. By right-clicking in the tree view or on an object, you can create Std Group.svg groups, transfer objects to groups, delete groups or objects, rename objects by double-clicking on their names, and perform additional operations, depending on the workbench that is now open.

A FreeCAD document may contain various types of objects. The Workbench Mesh is one illustration of the several types of objects that each workbench can produce.The Workbench Part of the Mesh Workbench produces mesh objects.svg Workbench Draught is an artefact created in part by a workbench.Part objects, etc., are likewise created using svg Draught Workbench.

In FreeCAD, there is always and only one active document if there are at least one or more documents open. The document you are presently working on is the one that can be seen in the 3D view.
