Rhodium Spot Rises Past $2000
A few months ago I posted about my strategy in investing a small portion of my Precious Metals funds into Rhodium with the intention of flipping it into Gold (or Silver) should the spot price go parabolic like it did in 2008. My main thesis is that there is a better than average chance world tensions in the 2 areas where 80% of the production for Rhodium takes place (South Africa & Russia) could interrupt world supply. South Africa is under severe domestic strain right now and Russia is protecting its own interests and seemingly under attack from Washington (and vice versa...nobody really knows, its all "Fake news").
When I entered this trade, Rhodium was trading around $800 and Gold was at $1,200. Rhodium has significantly outpaced Gold in the last 2 years since I put this trade on. I'm not declaring victory, but I do like its progress so far. I think there is still a good chance I can swap my Rhodium position for at least 5x or perhaps as much as 10x the number of ounces of Gold.
On the long term chart, you can see we are also still below the 20 year average price which also limits my downside risk.
