As we saw in this post, about 4,000 billion KWh (4.0 trillion KWh) of electricity were produced in the United States in 2020. In the same year, 3.8 trillion KWh were consumed.

38.9% of the electricity which is consumed (1.46 trillion KWh) is consumed by the residential sector (houses). The average house in the US consumed 11,000 KWh in 1 year. Reference

Of the residential consumption of electricity, these are the 5 most important categories (Reference):

  • Air conditioning (15.7%)
  • Space heating (14.2%)
  • Water heating (11.8%)
  • Refrigerators and freezers (7.1%)
  • Lighting (4.1%)
