Microsoft and Right to Repair

The right to repair, something manufacturers have been meandering around and locking down over the years. With widespread dialogue and investigation of even the biggest firms, will we see a change in culture in the near future with respect to electronic consumer goods?

Microsoft may allow customers to conduct self repair of their consoles with additional documentation. Whether this means further guidance and parts will be made readily available remains to be seen. This is an encouraging step that seems to be echoing off Valve’s recent Steam Deck approach. It may be a win-win scenario for manufacturers and consumers if it means less waste and costs required to get a console or device running as it should. Where resources are becoming more scarce and e-waste reduction paramount, self service and support may be the future.
