Not Doing It!
When I made a soft, well-padded landing on my butt around six weeks ago, I was very chuffed that I got away unscathed. Two nights later when I was woken up by excruciating pain in my knee, I knew something for sure was amiss. The pain became more intense when I tried straightening my leg.
But come daybreak and I started walking around the house, the pain vanished into thin air.
This became a nightly daily occurance, but my nightly resolutions to see the doctor the next day, was forgotten.
Till two nights ago when the pain got me out of bed in the middle of the night, it was really bad!
Long story, short, I have a hairline fracture on the fibula - the thin non-weightbearing bone on the calf.
Doc called me when she got the report, and said I must wear a moonboot, and see the neurosurgeon surgeon sooner for my neck follow-up so he can investigate if there's an issue inside the knee. I don't think that's the case.
The fall undid some of the good done by the physio, but it's settling down again as the numbness and shocks are dissipating.
I still have my 14 year-old moonboot, but was not happy at all. This contraption could easily throw me off-balance, and immediately put pressure on the joints on my left side.
Now that I knew there was a fracture, I suspected the nightly pain was possibly caused by me bending/curling my feet inwards when asleep, obviously causing strain on the fracture. The moonboot stayed on last night and I slept through the night!
I now also understand why my ankle at times felt like it wanted to give way as the fibula plays a role in stabilizing the ankle. It also supports the muscles and ligaments, which have all been troubling me.
My physiotherapist called this morning and questioned the use of a moonboot when I'm not experiencing any swelling nor pain when up and about, as it's not a weight-bearing bone! My question too.
She agreed that turning the feet inwards while asleep could very well be the cause of the nightly pain!
Tip for Stairs
Oh, and about stairs; she reminded me that good things go to heaven and bad things stay below! Meaning the good foot leads when going upstairs, and the bad foot takes the lead when going down.
Off came the moonboot, and I'm a free woman again!
Will sleep like a moon-walker but not walk like one no more!
