Should We Trade Our Dignity for Support?
This question made me think about a difficult period in my life, and it reminded me that sometimes life forces us to make choices we never imagined we would have to make.
A few years ago, my mother needed an operation, and I desperately needed money to help with the medical expenses. I had exhausted every option I could think of, and I was becoming more worried each day. Then someone offered to help me find a job with a wealthy family.
At first, I was relieved because it felt like an answer to my prayers. But before helping me secure the job, the person gave me a condition, I had to pay her 10% of my salary every month. To be honest, I didn't think it was fair. I felt uncomfortable and even a little taken advantage of because she was using my difficult situation to benefit herself.
Still, I didn't have many choices. My mother's health was my priority, and I couldn't afford to lose the opportunity. So I accepted the condition, even though I wasn't happy about it.
After I started working, my employer noticed something was bothering me. She asked me and when I explained the arrangement, she was surprised. She spoke to the woman who had referred me, and thankfully, the issue was resolved. I no longer had to give away part of my salary.
That experience taught me an important lesson. Sometimes people accept unfair treatment because they are trying to survive, not because they believe they deserve it. When you are in a desperate situation, your focus is often on solving the immediate problem. It doesn't mean you have stopped valuing your dignity, it simply means you are doing your best with the options you have.
At the same time, I don't believe support should come with exploitation or humiliation. Helping someone should be an act of kindness, not an opportunity to profit from their hardship. If you truly want to help, you should do so in a way that preserves the other person's dignity.
Looking back, I'm grateful everything worked out. My employer didn't just give me a job, she also stood up for me when she realized I was being treated unfairly. Her actions reminded me that there are still people who genuinely care and are willing to help without expecting something in return.
So, should we trade away our dignity for support? I would say no. But I also understand that life isn't always black and white. Sometimes people accept unfair conditions because they have no better option at that moment. The important thing is not to lose hope, to keep looking for better opportunities, and to remember that everyone deserves to be treated with respect, regardless of their circumstances.
Thanks for checking on my blog and have a wonderful day
