Another Juvenile Sand Piper

Sorry/Not-sorry for all the Sandpipers of late, but they are by far the most plentiful birds in the areas I travel to on our small island. Once I have a quad for transportation I will be able to seek out other species.

One of the big reasons why I'm not sorry about so many Sandpiper photos is the colors on their back feathers! The browns on white are so pretty and you don't really get a good look at that when you see them in person.

I am sorry about the garbage that's in the photos. Any Canadian will recognize not only where the garbage in the last photograph of this series is from, but they can also name the flavour! One of the bitter realities of this arctic community is that it is absolutely covered in garbage. From candy wrappers and pop cans (there's no recycling up here) to broken down snowmobiles and piles of scrap meat from hunts. The garbage in this community is vile and disgusting.

The dump in this community is 200 meters from the ocean and it does not contain a catch fence for the wind. Meaning the garbage often gets blown straight into the ocean by the high arctic winds. The community has been fighting to get a fence put in for several years but some problem always crops up to squash it from happening. From corruption to destruction. It is unfair that the children of Igloolik have to grow up in these conditions thinking that they are "normal" or even acceptable. Because they most definitely are not.

How then am I so different from the first men through this way? Like them, I left a settled life, I threw it all away. To seek a Northwest Passage at the call of many men To find there but the road back home again.
