Happy New Year Everyone!

New Year’s celebration in our family has always been simple but meaningful. What really made the night special was the food we prepared together for our New Year’s dinner. Seeing the table filled with different dishes instantly made the moment feel complete and festive.

We had a variety of foods, from fried chicken and fish to different meat dishes, vegetables, and side dishes. There was also a colorful fruit basket at the center of the table, which is something our family always believes brings good luck and abundance for the coming year. Each dish was assigned to different family members. It was not just about eating, but about sharing effort and time together.

The real highlights were the baked sushi and the chocolate pistachio cake.

The baked sushi was prepared by our cousin, and you could really feel the effort and love put into it. It was served in trays, generously topped and perfectly baked. What made it fun was how you eat it—you scoop a portion, wrap it in seaweed, and eat it in one bite. The moment it hits your mouth, all the flavors come together at once. The creaminess, the savory toppings, and the slight crunch from the seaweed created a really satisfying bite. It’s the kind of dish that makes you go back for “just one more” piece without realizing you’ve already had several.

After enjoying the baked sushi, dessert came in strong with the chocolate pistachio cake. This one was ordered from somewhere else, but it definitely did not disappoint. The rich chocolate layers paired so well with the nutty pistachio flavor. It wasn’t overly sweet, which made it even better. Each bite felt smooth and indulgent, the perfect way to end the meal.

New Year’s celebration was one of the most awaited moments for me when I was a kid. It was usually the time when we exchanged gifts, and I always looked forward to receiving something new. Today, now that I am already an adult, things have changed. I no longer receive gifts the way I used to. Instead, I am the one giving gifts to my nieces and nephews.

Even though I am no longer on the receiving end, the excitement is still there. Seeing the kids’ faces light up when they open their presents brings a different kind of joy. Their smiles, laughter, and excitement make the moment just as special, if not more. It reminds me of how happy I used to feel as a child during New Year.

What I love most about New Year dinners is how it brings everyone to the table. No matter how busy the year has been, this is the time when we slow down, eat together, and talk about our plans and hopes for the year ahead. The food tasted even better because of the laughter, stories, and memories shared while eating.
