Hogue - Sig edition folder
So, it's been awhile since I bought a new knife, but this one caught my eye. For one, it has the Sig logo and matches my Sig P365 EDC pistol. For two, it just looks like a well made folder.
This is a knife made by Hogue, yes the same Hogue that is famous for pistol grips. I'm not sure when they started making knives, but this seems nice. The model is listed as Hogue X5 Sig Tactical (3.5" blade, OAL 8.15"). For the knife geeks out there, it is CPM 154 Steel with 57-59 HRC hardness rating.
It features a nice, easy flip open extension, with a button release. More importantly for me, I really like the ability to lock the release button so that it can not be folded up under heavy usage. This is important for safety under heavy use or strain. Never a good idea to have a folder fold unexpectedly!
Blade is nice and sharp out of the box. They left a bit of oil on the blade, which to me is a nice touch. It comes with a nice padded case, although not sure why that would be needed for an EDC model. It also comes with an extra pocket clip for lefties. Doesn't matter to me, but again a nice touch for them to think of it. Also a Hogue sticker for the sticker fans.
I really like the flat area on top when opened. This provides a wide, stable place for the thumb to rest safely, and to provide good leverage when needed.
Folded, it seems like will be well suited to every day pocket carry, yet still large enough to handle larger jobs if needed. This also shows the reason it is called a "flipper", by simply pushing on that little black extension sticking out the top with index finger, the blade easily "flips" open and locks in place. No springs, no automatic knife legal complications, but very fast and simple to open and close with one hand.
Me, I was just looking for a nice new EDC blade that easy to open and good steel that is sharp, but will still hold an edge. I think this may be the ticket. So far very pleased with it.
