Why I'm Called - Earth
I am Earth.
I am the third planet from the Sun. You live on me!
My name was given in antiquity (Old English name formalized ~8th century CE; recognized as a planet in 1543).
My name is derived from Germanic languages; not mythologically named like others. Copernicus formalized my planetary status in his heliocentric model.
Unlike others, it's a descriptive name from Proto-Germanic "erþō," meaning ground or soil; not tied to a deity because Earth was seen as the center of the universe until the 16th century.
My name means ground or land (from Old English "eorþe").
An interesting fact is Earth is the only planet not named after a Greco-Roman god, reflecting its unique status as our home; in Latin, it's "Terra," still used in scientific contexts like "terrestrial."
