You will find that your Emergency kit requires periodic updating because the medications and foods have a limited shelf life and be replaced with fresh new stock. Batteries can lose their charge or leak damaging the flashlight and surrounding items. After time and practice you will be able to fine tune your Emergency kit. No one likes to prepare for the event of a disaster but it is necessary. You must also have a plan, like where to meet should you and your son become separated, a designated meeting place. Have your son prepare his own Emergency kit and guide his choices, perhaps complimentary to yours. Perhaps outfitted to be independent of yours.
I live within an Earthquake zone in Canada and I regularly update my preparations and designed it for a mid-winter Earthquake scenario.
You are doing the right thing.
