Value Beyond What You Receive

There was a day I sat quietly and observed a conversation between two young people. It wasn’t loud, but the message was clear. Every moment, it was “give me data,” “send me airtime,” “I need this, I need that.”

It made me reflect deeply.

I began to ask myself when did relationships become all about receiving? When did we forget that we are also meant to give, to build, and to support? I’m not saying it’s wrong for someone to provide for you. In fact, it can be an expression of care. But when it becomes the only language in a relationship, something important is missing.

Real connection goes beyond material things. It’s in encouragement, in thoughtful actions, in helping each other grow. Sometimes, value can be as simple as recommending a good book, speaking life into someone’s dreams, or standing by them when things are tough.
I’ve come to understand that being a person of value is not about what you collect from others, but what you contribute. Are you building the person beside you, or just drawing from them?

In friendships and relationships, none of us should become a burden when we have the ability to be a blessing.

This is something I’m also learning daily to be intentional, to give more than I take, and to grow into someone who adds value wherever I go.
Because at the end of the day, the strongest bonds are not built on constant demands, but on mutual growth, respect, and purpose.
