Para comenzar a hablar del filme noruego del momento, debo ser honesto con ustedes. El filme no es en mi opinión Terror como se le ha venido encasillando, considero luego de verlo y leer sobre las teorías de estudio psicológico en los niños que va más allá. Aunque el director no lo diga directamente, lo insinúa en una que otra entrevista. Eskil Vogt es noruego, quien por cierto es uno de los guionistas de The Worst Person in the World que está nominada al premio Óscar.

Vogt es también el director de Blind (2014), filme súper interesante. Pero hablemos de The Innocents. Una pieza compleja en muchos sentidos, porque pudiera entenderse al inicio como una película sobre los X-Men pues los niños descubren que poseen ciertos poderes y que además pueden hacer mucho bien y mal con ellos. Tampoco es un cuento de hadas donde los niños son pura magia, y mucho menos se parecen Matilda.

Es por eso que para mí no es precisamente de Terror, es más psicológico que otra cosa. Pero con algo de terror y drama. La trama es sobre la llegada de una familia a los suburbios de Oslo donde un grupo de niños comienzan una extraña amistad luego de descubrir que tienen poderes especiales, mover objetos, entrar en la mente de personas e incluso manipularlos.

Desde esta perspectiva se ve el descubrimiento del bien y el mal, las emociones a través de sus propias acciones y como su mundo es muy distante al de los adultos. Pero realmente lo que ellos con el paso del tiempo en el filme descubren es la moral, lo que está bien para ellos o no.

Una inocencia particular que nos abre un abanico de visiones sobre los niños y la posibilidad de desarrollar poderes que pudieran estar en nosotros pero que la estructura social nos pudiera impedir hacerlo con libertad.

¿Es esto posible?

Fue mi primera pregunta al ver a Ben (Sam Ashraf), es tal vez el personaje más maquiavélico del filme y en muchas escenas lo demuestra. Pero si miramos con objetividad, el personaje con un mayor peso es una niña con autismo.

Anna (Alva Brynsmo Ramstad) quien a pesar de su condición desarrolla un mayor poder que el de Ben y ella une al resto y funge como heroína en realidad. Algo también a entender es que a pesar de muchos estudios, los niños no saben la diferencia del bien o el mal y tampoco conocen de moral es esto enseñado por padres.

Pero ellos a través del amor empiezan a ponerle barreras e intentan detener a Ben, es decir; desarrollaron no solo un concepto casi único sobre la moral. También deciden ponerle fin a quien de muchas formas sabían intentaría matarles. La supervivencia a tope.

Los silencios reinan en The Innocents, el protagonismo de niños sin experiencia actoral y que su preparación tomó poco más un año les llevó a concebir interpretaciones tan excepcionales que dudo alguno deje de actuar. Eskil Vogt logró una dirección absolutamente entrañable, deliciosa en mi opinión y que los niños llevan el peso en el filme. Los adultos son secundarios en la película, algo que pocas veces podemos ver en el cine actualmente.

No les diré el final, tampoco más sobre la trama pues creo que ya dije lo suficiente. Lo que les planteo no es más que mi percepción de una película que pareciera pasar bajo la mesa y no se le ha dado la importancia que merece. Vean el filme, no esperen mucho movimiento, es algo lenta por los silencios y las tomas. Pero nunca me molestó eso, me mantuvo atento y despierto durante su desarrollo.

Yo le daría 7/10 en total, pero un sólido 10 a las actuaciones de los niños.

That's why for me it's not exactly horror, it's more psychological than anything else. But with some horror and drama. The plot is about the arrival of a family to the suburbs of Oslo where a group of children begins a strange friendship after discovering that they have special powers, move objects, enter the minds of people and even manipulate them.

From this perspective, we see the discovery of good and evil, emotions through their actions, and how their world is very distant from that of adults. But really what they discover over time in the film is morality, what is right or wrong for them.

A particular innocence that opens a range of visions about children and the possibility of developing powers that could be in us but that the social structure could prevent us from doing it freely.

Is this possible?

It was my first question when watching Ben (Sam Ashraf), he is perhaps the most Machiavellian character in the film, and in many scenes, he shows it. But if we look objectively, the character with the most weight is a girl with autism.

Anna (Alva Brynsmo Ramstad) despite her condition develops a greater power than Ben and she unites the rest and acts as a heroine in reality. Something also to understand is that despite many studies, children do not know the difference between right and wrong and neither do they know about morals taught by their parents.

But they through love begin to put up barriers and try to stop Ben, i.e.; they developed not only an almost unique concept of morality. They also decide to put an end to the one who in many ways they knew would try to kill them. Survival at its best.

Silences reign in The Innocents, the leading roles of children with no acting experience and that their preparation took little more than a year led them to conceive performances so exceptional that I doubt any of them will stop acting. Eskil Vogt achieved an endearing direction, delightful in my opinion, and the children carry the weight in the film. The adults are secondary in the film, something we rarely get to see in cinema these days.

I will not tell you the ending, nor more about the plot because I think I have already said enough. What I am telling you is nothing more than my perception of a film that seems to go under the table and has not been given the importance it deserves. Watch the film, don't expect a lot of movement, it's a bit slow because of the silences and the shots. But I was never bothered by that, it kept me attentive and awake during its development.

I would give it 7/10 overall, but a solid 10 to the performances of the kids.
