🎓 When Learning Becomes Transactional: A Quiet Shift in Our Education Landscape

Having worked in the education industry for years, particularly in higher education, I’ve noticed a concerning shift in Malaysia’s education landscape. Student competitions, which were once designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and foster exploration, are increasingly being driven by cash prizes rather than learning and growth.

In some cases, the primary motivation is no longer the learning outcome, but the monetary gain from participating.

Even more concerning is that some educators are endorsing this shift. Teachers and organizers, despite meals, learning opportunities, and scholarship awards being provided, now expect additional monetary compensation for their involvement.

Yes—time and effort deserve appreciation. But when cash replaces curiosity, we’re sending the wrong message.

💭 What message are we sending?

• That learning only matters if there's a reward?

• That participation should be paid, not pursued?

• That knowledge without cash has no value?

• This isn’t just a funding issue. It’s a mindset shift—one that turns education into a transaction.

Research shows that while rewards may drive short-term action, intrinsic motivation—like purpose, mastery, and growth—leads to long-term success. (Deci & Ryan, 2020; MOE Malaysia, 2023)

But we’re seeing the opposite. Students chase prizes, not progress. Teachers ask, "What’s in it for me?" not, "How can I contribute?"

🚫 Let’s not normalize this. Learning should never be reduced to “pay to play” or “perform to be paid.” We must re-center education around passion, not payouts. Inspire participation through purpose, not perks. In the end, we’re not just teaching content—we’re shaping mindsets.
