Your smartphone could be acting as a seismic sensor

Now imagine that while you are reading this article on your cell phone, the same device that vibrates with WhatsApp messages may currently be saving lives all over the planet. Without you noticing, your smartphone could be acting as a seismic sensor, part of a gigantic global network that detects earthquakes with surprising precision and speed.

</p And who is behind this? None other than Google, who in just 3 years created one of the largest earthquake detection networks in history, using millions of Android cell phones spread around the world. It all started in 2020 with a bold idea, transforming the moving sensors already present in cell phones, the accelerometers into seismic detectors.

</p The system works like this: when a phone detects an unusual acceleration typical of an earthquake, it sends a signal to Google's servers. These servers analyze the data from thousands of other devices in the same region looking for similar patterns. If several phones register the same type of vibration in a very short period of time, the system crosses the data in real time and issues an alert, "an earthquake is occurring."

The efficiency of the system became evident in the numbers, during 3 years of operation it detected more than 300 earthquakes per month in 98 different countries with magnitudes ranging from 1.9 to an impressive 7.8 on the Richter scale, and the most curious thing, 85% of the people who received an alert reported having felt the tremor, more than a third received the warning before the event began, all this without the need to install physical sensors or depend on local seismic infrastructure, everything is done from the common cell phone that is in anyone's pocket or hand. This system is especially valuable in regions of the world that do not have access to traditional seismic stations such as parts of Africa, Southeast Asia and South America, and as Android is the most used operating system globally, this coverage became almost inevitable, there are 2.5 million devices constantly monitoring the ground with software that is already pre-installed and active by default, the user does not need to do anything, the system works alone and the more people are connected, the more accurate the detection becomes.
