The new technologies will create new jobs, that is true, but many others will disappear and one of the jobs that is on the verge of extinction is that of a warehouse worker. The American company Angelity has created a robot that it has presented at the Promad 2023 meeting that was held in Chicago from March 20 to 23. The video shows the "Digit" robot and it is the first multipurpose robot focused on the activities carried out by human beings in logistics work, basically it does the work of loading, unloading and placing packages.

Digit is designed from the ground up to go where people go and do useful work safely in spaces designed for humans. The robot measures one meter 70 and weighs about 60 kilos, and this is an advanced model that incorporates a head with eyes animated by led, as well as hands capable of handling a wide variety of loads and reaching objects located at different heights. Warehouse work includes many repetitive and automated tasks, processes that all too often cause injury, high turnover, and human operators. Digit could help with the tasks and even replace most of the staff who work in a warehouse, it is not yet known how much the robot will cost but the company already has orders and announced that the first units will be in service at the beginning of 2024

What impact can these robots have on the job market? let's look for an example Amazon in 2022, Amazon had approximately one and a half million workers in its global workforce, a very significant part of them dedicated to warehouse tasks, an activity with high risk. In the United States alone, workers at Amazon facilities suffered more than 34,000 serious injuries on the job during 2021, it seems clear that in the very near future many of those jobs will be replaced by robots, which will be able to work 24 hours a day. day 7 days a week, it is inevitable in the same way that it was inevitable in the first half of the 20th century that tractors replaced a lot of human labor in the field. If we lived in an ideal world, we would see that while jobs are being destroyed, other alternatives would be created to occupy people who are left unemployed, new opportunities, new activities and even new businesses would be created, robots would not be our substitutes. , but our tools to increase productivity, creativity and prevent humans from having to do painful or risky tasks, that would be in an ideal world.
