TIL about L'appel du vide!

Ever been in a situation wherein you are on top of a building or cliff and all of a sudden you just thought of jumping off but never really do it? Like for a split second you have these suicidal thoughts.

Well apparantely there is a term for that and is called L'appel du vide or in literal English translation The Call of the Void!

So the next time an immediate self-destructive thought pops into your mind like when you are driving a car and all of a sudden you just feel you wanna crash in to something or someone, well you might be experiencing this one.

I did a low-effort digging on Google about the scientific basis for this thoughts but it seems there are no strong ones. A French study however calls these as "High Place Phenomenon" and examined over 431 students some of which are depressed and some are mentally fine. And their research showed that even mentally fine people experience L'appel du vide once in a while.

So yeah! It's not only you who sometimes gets this suicidal thoughts. From the looks of it, many are. XD
