Do All The Things, How To Stay Motivated!
Motivation is sometimes an elusive action to grab. You see your goals and you see what you want to do, but yet... The active reaching out for and just holding onto it seems like an insurmountable task.
Today we are going to look at some ideas and methods you can use to take hold of motivation, and attain the desires and goals that you want.
The topics that we will do a light dive into are, time management, strength training, human behavior, our immune system, and our mental state.
These are topics that I have done research into and hope you can find some information within it interesting and helpful.
Time management
One the biggest things and staying motivated is to keep an eye on your time. With so many beeps and boops from different pieces of technology around us, It's easy to get distracted and then loose grasp of that motivation.
This article from the wanderlust worker, outlines A 15-minute rule that is wonderful in keeping you on track and motivated.
To implement this, simply set a timer for 15 minutes. Use your smartphone, smartwatch, or any other device at your disposal. Agree that you’ll do whatever task it is for those 15 minutes, at least. Then you can stop.

Time management summary:
- Put your technology of the silent mode
- Set a timer for 15 minutes
- Focus on that one goal for 15 min then take a break.
Strength training
It is been proven numerous times that having a healthy body increases blood circulation, the more your blood circulates more oxygen gets brought to the various parts of your body and the less lethargic you feel. It's important if you want to be a motivated individual to keep your body shape.
Here is a great quote from the Mayo Clinic.
For most healthy adults, the Department of Health and Human Services recommends at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity a week, or a combination of moderate and vigorous activity. Aim to incorporate Strength Training exercises of all the major muscle groups into your fitness routine at least twice a week.
You can also slip in physical activity throughout the day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk up and down sidelines while watching the kids play sports. Take a walk during a break at work. Pedal a stationary bike or do strength training exercises while you watch TV at night.

Strength training summary
- Try to get at least 150 minutes of moderate activity every week
- Work moderate activity into your everyday life by taking the stairs
Human behavior
Understanding a little about human behavior and why humans do things (* I am of course assuming that you are human), is an important key to unlocking your internal motivation. It's amazing how just realizing simple things about the fundamental nature's of our brains and our behaviors, can have big impact on our lives.
James Clear Has a great quote about this.
One of the most surprising things about motivation is that it often comes after starting a new behavior, not before. We have this common misconception that motivation arrives as a result of passively consuming a motivational video or reading an inspirational book. However, active inspiration can be a far more powerful motivator.
Motivation is often the result of action, not the cause of it. Getting started, even in very small ways, is a form of active inspiration that naturally produces momentum.

Human behavior summary
- Motivation happens AFTER you start action, not before.
- Start doing something even a little, this will compound and keep you more motivated.
Immune system
It should be no surprise that if you feel sick, you won't be motivated. Or least I know personally if I'm sick I just lay in bed with a wet towel on my head trying to pass the time.
Eating healthy foods, and getting a good amount of sleep is an ideal method to boost your immune system, and thus it will give you a better chance to stay healthy and motivated.
In this article from Web MD they talk about this.
Eat well and stay hydrated. Getting some greens, and veggies in and steering away from junk foods will not only help the waistline but also can help your immune system. Many veggies and fruits contain vitamins that can give you a boost, helping to protect you from infection.
Sleep. This may seem basic, but it is really important. Getting enough sleep can also help arm your immune system, but also helps with your focus, energy, and mood.

Immune system summary
- Eat healthy foods, such as vegetables.
- Get a good nights sleep.
Mental State
There is a terminology called "The Flow". This is when the world sort of melts away around you, when your routine becomes embedded in you, that simply by starting that routine, motivation gets built and compounds and you drop into this mental state, the flow. Just like running water, motivation and creativity flows you're not burdened by confusion.
However, to enter the state, the project (task) you're doing has to be routine enough where it's not necessarily over the challenge but yet interesting.
Here's a great quote about this.
A word about the task of choice. You can’t enter a flow state if the difficulty of the work exceeds your ability to perform it. You must choose an activity where there’s a balance between both variables. The task should be challenging enough to demand your full attention to the point that it pushes your capabilities but doesn’t exceed them. Easy jobs aren’t going to get you in a state of flow, either. Source : Here
Mental state summary
- Work towards having your task / work become routine
- This will help you enter a flow state when you start.
Conclusion and final thoughts
Motivation is a state of mind that we can train ourselves to enter into.
Through mild exercise, good health, goal setting and understanding what triggers motivation you could enter into a flow state that grows limitless endurance to be motivated.
I encourage you to go out there and try 15 minute focused work block. This will get you started on your project which should, kick start your motivation engine. Overtime by doing this repeatedly, this 15-minute window will become routine, routine will help you drop into a flow state better. This all will compound and with luck, keep you more motivated.
Hope you found some points and links about this topic of motivation interesting.
