Stairway to Happiness

Amid the extremely difficult circumstances we’ve had to endure in the city of Caracas and its surroundings, coming across a space like this is a true blessing. Right next to the National Pantheon, on a staircase that I think almost no one uses, we find the perfect canvas. A painting on the edge of each step, which, taken as a whole, reveals the most visible elements of our cosmos. On one side, the sun shines with its warm colors, profound presence, and radiant heat, while on the other side we find a moon that is always mysterious, surrounded by cool colors and a calmer energy.

Escalera Hacia la Felicidad

En medio de las circunstancias tan difíciles que nos ha tocado vivir en la ciudad de Caracas y sus alrededores, encontrarse con un espacio como este es una verdadera bendición, ya que a un costado del Panteón Nacional y en una escalera que creo que casi nadie utiliza, nos encontramos con un lienzo perfecto. Una pintura en el orillo de cada escalón y en cuyo conjunto nos demuestra los elementos más visibles de nuestro cosmos. Por un lado, el sol brilla con sus colores cálidos, actitud profunda y radiante calor, mientras que del otro lado nos encontramos con una luna que siempre es misteriosa, rodeada de colores fríos y una energía más tranquila.

At first, we might think this is just another example of street art, but the truth is that it goes far beyond a simple painting, since it conveys feelings, emotions, and energies that are perfectly expressed, brightening our day and filling our spirits with a touch of color, harmony, and tranquility.

Al principio pudiéramos pensar que se trata de una muestra más de arte callejero, pero la verdad es que esto va mucho más allá de una simple pintura, puesto que aquí existen sentimientos, emociones y energías, las cuales son transmitidas de manera perfecta, alegrándonos el día y llenando nuestro espíritu de un poco de color, armonía y al mismo tiempo tranquilidad.

This unique mural was created by Venezuelan visual artist Felipe García and was brought to life thanks to a government initiative aimed at revitalizing abandoned spaces. Personally, I believe that initiatives like this should be replicated all over the world, since cities tend to become gray and hostile spaces over time. However, it is through art—in all its forms—that we are able to humanize these urban spaces, which sometimes retain their functionality but, without us realizing it, gradually lose their purpose.

Este peculiar mural fue creación del artista plástico venezolano Felipe García y su ejecución se dio gracias a una iniciativa gubernamental que buscaba recuperar espacios que se encontraban en estado de abandono. En lo personal, creo que este tipo de iniciativas deberían replicarse a lo largo y ancho de todo el mundo, ya que las ciudades con el tiempo suelen convertirse en espacios grises y hostiles, pero es a través del arte, desde todas sus expresiones, que logramos humanizar a estos espacios urbanos, que a veces siguen manteniendo su funcionalidad, pero que, sin darnos cuenta, van perdiendo su razón de ser.
