Canada Post wants to raise stamp prices

The Crown Corporation proposes to increase the price of each stamp sold by roll or slip from 85 cents to 90 cents.

As for the price of the stamps bought by the unit, it would pass from the current rate of one dollar to 1.05 dollar.

Rates for letters destined for the United States or elsewhere in the world would also increase.

Canada Post says it would be the first stamp rate increase in five years.

"The effect of this increase, the first since 2014, would be less than $ 1 a year for the average Canadian household and about $ 14 a year for a typical small business," it said.

The company said the federal government is forcing it to remain financially self-sustaining, forcing it to generate enough revenue to support its current and future services.

Canada Post reminds us that Canadians can avoid price increases by purchasing "Permanent" stamps before January that remain valid despite future prices.

The price increase proposal will be published in the coming days in the Canada Gazette for comment.
