ENGLISH VERSION

Today more than ever, I know just how resilient we can be. If there’s one country that has been through so much, it’s ours: Venezuela. It’s been two days since this terrible disaster—an earthquake that struck our country. Well, not just one, but two.

At that moment, I was at home, sitting quietly in front of my computer, when suddenly I felt a strange movement; I thought it was just my imagination, and when I left the room, my mother told me that her bed had moved—it was shaking. My mom felt dizzy, so I told her to sit down, while I remained standing, feeling that swaying; I could see the plants moving. It lasted only a few seconds, but it felt like an eternity,I live in Anaco, Anzoátegui State, Venezuela.

We went out onto the street, and so did the neighbors; we all just stood there staring, wondering what had happened. We all felt the movement. I wanted to check the news to see if anything had been reported, but I had no signal or anything; we were cut off from the outside world. It went on like that for several hours, without knowing anything at all—not even about anyone else. It wasn’t until two hours later that my mom was able to reach our neighbor. She told her that it was really bad; they didn’t have power. For a moment, we thought she was exaggerating—how bad could it really be? That’s what crossed my mind...😞

When the signal finally came back, we were able to watch the news. I was frozen in shock when I saw all those images—everything destroyed, buildings collapsed, people running back and forth, not understanding what was happening, screaming, begging for help. Just writing these lines gives me goosebumps. “How did this happen in just a few seconds?” was what I thought.

Now, as they say, this was the one thing we needed—a natural disaster. But what else has to happen in our country for the world to see how bad things are here? That’s the truth. Yes, we’re resilient; yes, we’re united; we support and help one another. But what happens beyond all that? Because we weren’t prepared for a catastrophe like this.

I can’t stop thinking about all those people trapped under the rubble, who have to wait for help to arrive, because we don’t have qualified personnel or modern equipment—it’s unfortunate, but true.

I thank God that my family and I are well and safe, but it still hurts and saddens me to see what everyone else is going through—those who lost their homes and their loved ones. I’ve seen on the news how a mother lost her children, trapped underground, how a father weeps over the loss of his family—children and babies pulled from the rubble. How sad! Anyone who doesn’t cry seeing that truly has no feelings, because it’s inevitable; at least I can’t help but shed tears.

I only ask God that, just as He has put us through this trial, He will give us the strength to overcome it, to survive, and to move forward. May God’s mercy be with those who are crying today because they’ve been left with nothing—no roof over their heads, no place to live—and may they receive the support they need, because now more than ever, they’re going to need it. that’s another matter—and the good news is that the government has recognized that we need that humanitarian aid, those donations from other countries, and the arrival of professionals and rescue workers who are experts in this type of disaster.

All we can do is keep praying, trusting that these people will be able to help and find those who are missing; there are many people we still haven’t heard from. For my part, I’m looking for ways to help—several collection centers have been set up here to send supplies to Caracas and La Guaira, so that’s a good way to lend a hand as well.

I hope that all the Hivers who were there or nearby are safe. I’m sending you a big hug, and well, we’ll keep moving forward—we’ll get through this too, with faith and hope.
