Dealing with Toxic People in the Workplace

The term "toxic" often refers to behavior that is destructive and negatively impacts mental or emotional health, and can even impact physical health.

Toxic behavior isn't limited to friendships, family, or romantic relationships; it also occurs in the workplace.

How do you deal with toxic people in the workplace?

Before we deal with toxic people in the workplace, we must understand how they treat us. This is crucial to avoiding mental and emotional abuse.

To clarify, I'll give examples of toxic behavior in the workplace. Consider the examples below:

A coworker who always takes advantage of your kindness and concern, a coworker who is always dependent on you for help and has no desire to improve their own work skills, a coworker who hates to lose and often does whatever they want—these are all examples of toxic people in the workplace.

Especially if we are juniors, we often experience unkind treatment from senior coworkers. We may not realize it at first because toxic people often manipulate us by initially praising us to make us feel proud and benefit others, but over time, we will feel uncomfortable.

So how do we deal with these toxic people?

1. First, of course, you must have the courage to act.

2. Second, don't hesitate to say "No" if you feel exploited by your coworkers.

3. Third, limit interactions appropriately. Don't grieve the loss or ostracization of toxic people.

4. Be indifferent, meaning that in a work environment, the most important thing is that you have fulfilled your responsibilities and that your relationship with your superiors is good. Don't let being ostracized by a toxic coworker weigh you down.

5. If a toxic coworker's behavior goes beyond that, there's no harm in reporting the toxic coworker to your superior or human resources (HR). However, before doing so, make sure you have gathered evidence of their negative behavior. If necessary, invite other coworkers who have experienced the impact.
