Affiliate Marketing: Why I Don’t "Pay It Forward" in Subscription-Based Affiliate Programs
From time to time, I receive emails from subscribers asking if I’ll “pay it forward” and cover their first month in a subscription-based affiliate program. Most recently, this question came up in relation to a program I've worked with for well over ten years now. The program pays 100% commissions on the front end, so my subscriber's idea is that I pay for his first month during which time he hopes to get a sale and presumably pay me back, having broken even, and build his business from there...
On paper, that sounds reasonable.
In practice, it’s one of the fastest ways to set yourself up for frustration, so I decided to make a “walking-talking” video for my list subscriber and anybody else who hopes to get some “PIF love” from their sponsor. In the video I talk through a better alternative for broke affiliate marketers to adopt:
The real problem with starting this way
If a small monthly fee is already a make-or-break decision, then the issue isn’t the program – it’s timing and foundation. Building an online business takes experimentation, patience, and consistency. Very few beginners make sales immediately, especially if they’re still learning how to generate traffic, build a list, and follow up properly.
When money is tight, recurring monthly fees create pressure. Pressure leads to rushed decisions, desperation promotions, and eventually giving up. I’ve been there myself, and I’ve watched countless others go through the same cycle.
That’s why I don’t believe subscription-based programs are where you should start if you’re coming in with little or no budget.
What to do instead if you’re starting from zero
If you’re short on cash, the smarter move is to remove monthly commitments entirely and focus on fundamentals.
Start by using free tools. A free LeadsLeap account gives you a basic autoresponder, a lead capture page, and the ability to send broadcast emails. That’s enough to begin building a list and learning how this business actually works.
Next, look for products you can promote without upfront costs. WarriorPlus is a good example. Many vendors are willing to approve beginners who haven't yet made any sales, especially for traffic-related offers. Traffic is always in demand, and it’s much easier to promote than most “make money” promises.
At this stage, your goal isn’t to get rich. It’s to learn how to build a list, make offers, and follow up consistently.
Building traffic leverage without monthly fees
Once you start bringing in a little money, the next priority should be traffic leverage – not subscription-based programs yet.
This is where lifetime safelist memberships make sense. With a one-time payment, you get ongoing traffic benefits without the stress of monthly bills.
As your list grows, you can also promote those traffic programs to your subscribers, creating a small but steady feedback loop.
Earning while learning
Another option I discuss in the video is joining programs that pay you even as a free member. One example is Satsman.com – a site where you can start earning Bitcoin satoshis from day one without spending anything.
Programs like this are easier to promote because they’re free to join and offer immediate value. They’re also a practical way to begin building assets – both a list and a small crypto stash – while you’re still learning the ropes.
The bigger picture
There are many ways to start an online business with little or no money, but none of them are effortless. You still have to do the work, and you have to do it consistently.
What I want to help people avoid is putting money they can’t afford into programs they’re not yet skilled enough to profit from. Subscription programs absolutely have their place – I’ve benefitted a lot from programs such as the Prosperity Marketing System over the years – but they work best once you already have traffic, systems, and experience in place.
Take this step by step. Build your foundation first. The rest comes later.
