Hmm, someone may have been listening to your tactics discussed on a Splinterlands 101 Podcast, perhaps Matt.
The Flesh Golem and Scarred Llama Mage combo, played by @Moodo just defeated me and with lower level cards too. His summoner was only Level 1 and common card at level 3.
My max summoner, max gold common and max legendary didn't defeat :(.
Amazing to see the tactics win out over power.
