Slow Laptop? Don't Replace It Until You Check This - Check Your AC Adapter First...

I have an old Dell laptop for personal use and it has been working/running great reliably for years now. I remember that I had upgraded the laptop by replacing the traditional Hard Disk Drive (HDD) with an SSD[Solid-State Drive.] and things became very fast. Here are the details around my laptop.. Yes I now its an Old school laptop but as I said its for personal use and I do not rely on it when it comes to using applications that require intensive CPU and RAM...My funda or principle is pretty simple why change or buy a new thing until the one which you have is doing the job for you just fine? And the same has been with this current laptop that I have been using for ages - why replace it when it does its JOB?

Coming to laptop slow part or being sluggish for a few days now, I started to debug what happened all of a sudden that things are working so flow i.e. the browsing part is slow, simple application like notepad, canva and others are taking too much of a time to load and while switiching windows tab there is this slow sluggishness. In simple words it was becoming very hard to work on this laptop as eveything was working slow. When you're used to working on fast and responsive systems, it becomes very easy to lose patience. I knew something wasn't right, so instead of giving up on the laptop, I decided to investigate the root cause step by step. Here is the list from where I started and where it ended..

• Checked Windows Task Manager for high CPU, Memory, and Disk usage [cleaned like 30GB space from C dirve] - it didnt slove the problem...
• Reviewed background processes and startup applications - disabled a couple of startup applications - didnt resovle the issue...
• Verified available RAM and SSD health - all good here
• Monitored disk activity using Resource Monitor
• Investigated Chrome's CPU and memory usage

CPU Utilization: 8%
CPU Speed: 0.89 GHz
Base Speed: 2.50 GHz

• Verified Chrome hardware acceleration and GPU status
• Checked Intel graphics driver and DirectX acceleration
• Measured CPU clock speed under load
• Investigated BIOS settings for hardware-related issues
• Identified AC Adapter = Unknown in BIOS

- Re-seated the Dell power adapter connector

• Verified BIOS now detects AC Adapter = 130W
• Confirmed CPU frequency increased from 0.89 GHz to 2.70 GHz
• Attempted BIOS update (blocked due to dead battery)
• Identified the root cause: CPU throttling caused by the BIOS not recognizing the AC adapter

Initially:
❌ AC Adapter = Unknown
❌ CPU ~0.89 GHz
❌ Slow laptop

Ultimately after performing all of the above mentioned steps, it drilled down to Re-setting the Dell power adapter connector properly to ensure the BIOS correctly detected the AC adapter and prevented CPU throttling. If you see above my CPU throttling during the problem was around 0.89 GHz and after the fix was applied the AC Adapter = Unknown in BIOS became detected AC Adapter = 130W here is the image of AC power detected..

Now:

✅ AC Adapter = 130W
✅ CPU = 2.70 GHz
✅ CPU can turbo correctly

Now I did a simple test and started browsing Youtube, opened multiple tabs and application and to my surprise everything was now back to normal and was working fast. Here is the CPU utilization after fixing the issue. More importantly, notice that the CPU is now running at 2.70 GHz instead of the earlier 0.89 GHz, confirming that the processor is no longer being throttled by the BIOS.

Ok things are back to normal for laptop and there is no need to change or replace it with a new one.. I saved a coupld of thousand dollars and I am happy. Thankful to ChaptGpt for coming at rescue.. I loved debugging and resolving the issue with ChatGpt assistance.. Well this should be it for todays post on - "Slow Laptop? Don't Replace It Until You Check This - Check Your AC Adapter First..."
