Debunking cryptocurrency misconceptions while spreading hive awareness
1 Bitcoin is free money on the internet?
Apparently, some of them have heard about Bitcoin, but the free part? Like Bitcoin is readily available for free, if you have a video, how hilarious, there is a false misconception that Bitcoin can be easily obtained from the internet by signing up for any crypto wallet or joining a mining pool. I discovered that some of them have been deceived and thereby defrauded of their hard-earned money, trying to get free Bitcoin from phishing links and the like, the reason why a lot of them are skeptical about getting onboarded on Hive even when it is a legit platform. the fear of their previous scam encounter discourages them. I made them aware that Bitcoin isn't free like they thought, instead, acquiring Bitcoin or any other cryptocurrency typically involves buying it from an exchange or earning it through various means, and for hive, we earn HBD when we get curated on our post, which can be converted to hive, the blockchain token also can be bought from Binance for those that wish to invest instead.
2 Crypto is only used for illegal activities
This is a very misconception in my country, no thanks to the internet fraudster known as "Yahoo boys" who take advantage of people online to rip them off their money, A crypto enthusiast is always mistaken fir a Yahoo boy, I'm sure many of us here have been accused at one point of this claim, this misconception needs to be dealt with, showing them the activities we do here on hive, yea, I used Hive as my strong standing point all true because of the confidence and benefits of hive I've been privileged to partake of. While cryptocurrency has been associated with illicit activities, and the government ban even made things worse, I made them aware that the majority of crypto activities are legitimate, and lives have been changed, just from being involved in web3 activities, some invest in crypto and yield a huge return during the bull run, while others involve in other lawful activities like blogging, gaming, blogging, etc like we do here on hive.
3 Bitcoin is a real coin, let me see😂
I told you it was going to get funny at a point, It's not a surprise some think of Bitcoin as an actual coin, because of its name, now this is where it gets trickish a hot, and a lot of patience is needed to explain that Bitcoin doesn't exist as a physical coin, but rather it exist as a pure digital form of currency on a blockchain. And it has the highest value among other cryptocurrencies.
4 Cryptocurrency is a get-rich-quick scheme
When you introduce something of value such as Hive to someone, they instantly think it is a get-rich scheme, Many have fallen for online scams in their haste to get rich quickly through online means, while it is possible to get rich in crypto, these things take time, and Hive isn't a get rich quick platform, rather consistency, and being committed throughout a period of time, also involving yourself in other activities such as investing, saving/holding might get you rich, remember with time. The reality is that the crypto market can be highly volatile, and gains are not guaranteed.
5 Blockchain is a chain of blocks
Ok, during the conversation, I kept repeating blockchain technology, and someone thought of this literally as a physical chain of blocks, there came a need for clarification that what "Blockchain" actually means is that it is a distributed ledger technology, where transactions are recorded in blocks and are also linked together, it is not a physical chain but a digital structure. Hive for instance runs on a blockchain technology and it is also a decentralized platform, meaning, no one owns or can control your account except you.
CONCLUSION
Most of these misconceptions has led to confusion and even financial loss for some of them, the more reason why a lot of people needs to be educated about cryptocurrency and how it works, Ignorance can be a major cause of people losing out on getting onboarded to hive. It's essential for anyone interested in cryptocurrency to do their research well and gain a proper understanding of how it works and the associated risks and opportunities, also any Rivers onboarding new users should take their time to coach the newbies they onboard, be realistic only then will genuine hivers come onboard bringing value, quality contents and growth to the block chain.
