A day like today: Hegira

There was a child in Saudi Arabia who was orphaned and adopted by his relatives, who belonged to a tribe of merchants.

The young man was able to travel in caravans that traveled through Ethiopia, Yemen, Persia and other regions of the Middle East.

When he reached adolescence, that boy, whose name was Muhammad, worked as a commercial agent for a wealthy widow, and he did it with such success in every way, that he married her soon after.

But Muhammad felt that no religion, not even Christianity, was authentically monotheistic; and one day, he said that he had a mystical experience: His work as a traveler and agent of commercial caravans, led him to have contact with different religions and was about to become a Christian; He said that the archangel Gabriel had appeared to him to bring him the messages of God, and that he would dictate the rules that should be in a holy book called the Qur'an.

Then a new absolutely monotheistic religion emerged and its followers began to be persecuted. To ensure the safety of his faithful and his own life, Muhammad decided to travel to the city of Yatrib, which since then changed the name to Medina.

Medina means city of the prophet, and this trip, known as the Hegira, began on a day like today, July 16, 622. This day is known as the first of the Muslim era.

And with this religion, as with all, human beings continue to seek, beyond the stars, the miracles that could be done by their own hands.
