The Tree of Altea/ El Árbol de Altea

Included in the festivities of San Juan is this pagan cult celebrating the fertility of the earth. A tree is cut down and the young people of the village take it to the church square, where a hole has previously been dug with the intention of planting the tree in it.
The tree, a poplar, is several metres high, making it a difficult task to carry through the narrow streets of Altea, in the province of Alicante (Spain).

Incluido en las fiestas de San Juan está esta culto pagano con el que se celebra la fertilidad de la tierra. Se corta un árbol que los jóvenes del pueblo trasladan a la plaza de la iglesia, donde previamente se ha cavado un hoyo con la intención de plantar el árbol en él.
El árbol, un chopo, tiene varios metros de altura, lo que hace de su traslado por las calles estrechas de Altea, en la provincia de Alicante (España), una tarea dura.
