Anything for...
Each Sunday over the last few weeks I've shared my most-played track of the week however today I thought I'd do something a little different; mainly because I don't actually want to share my most-played track with you - It cut's too close to the bone and I'd like to keep it private. I know you understand. So, something different.
I generally use Spotify for my music and like most I have playlists including a liked songs playlist - My liked songs playlist has many hundreds of tracks in it and mostly I play it on random although occasionally play it in recently played or recently added order; I mix it up y'all. If you were to delve into it you'd probably be surprised at the tracks you'd find as my tastes are broad, but each of those tracks means something now, or has done in the past, which is why they are there. It's one of those I'll share today.
Prior to writing this post I selected random-play on my liked songs playlist with the intention of taking the very first thing that played and sharing it with you here. It's below.
This song is sung by an American fellow called Meat Loaf, a dubious name I'll admit. Sort of meaty and loafy, but way more interesting than Michael Lee Aday, his real name; but I digress, on to the song.
It's a cool song as is the video, in a 1993 sort of way. I was 23 years old that year and remember this track hitting the charts. I was heavily into Van Halen and 1993 was the year their Live Right Here, Right Now album was released which I loved although I found time to listen to the loafy one too.
The Meat actually won a Grammy for best solo rock performance for this song and it was at number one for several weeks around the world. I don't really care about all that though, I just liked it, and still do.
The video was directed by Michael Bay of Transformers, Pearl Harbor, Bad Boys, The Rock, Armageddon directorial fame, just to name a few. It stars Meat Loaf of course, and the love-interest woman is Dana Patrick who mimes the words which are actually sung by Lorraine Crosby in the song.
It's a play on the beauty and the beast storyline with The Loafer playing the beast of course. He sees the beauty, Dana Patrick, and falls for her but doubts himself because he is a hideous ogre - How could she ever love a heinous beast like him? She follows him back to his mansion though, warms up near the fire, has a fully-clothed bath then changes into a dress made from shoe laces and has a little vocal by-play with the beastly meaty fellow. It's then that her love cuts through his doubt and self-loathing and...You'll have to watch the video to see what happens next.
What's interesting is that it took me years of wondering what "I'd do anything for love, but I won't do that" actually referred to...What won't he do?
Well, that line refers to whatever he said above it...So:
But I'll never forget the way you feel right now,
Oh no, no way.
And I would do anything for love,
But I won't do that
No I won't do that
The I won't do that part of the lyrics in that section above refers to the fact he won't forget the way she feels right now. Get it? I could never work it out but I ended up seeing an interview on VH1 with the Loafy One and he explained it. Conundrum solved.
It's an interesting track, I like the rock-ballad nature of it and in 1993 when it was released...Well, there's reasons why it resonated with me that you probably won't care about and don't need to know.
It's a long track with the album version, the one I listen to on Spotify, being some 12 minutes long. The radio version of only 7:58 minutes is apparently the longest number one hit in the UK and US ever, beating out Hey Jude from the Beatles for the accolade. I'm not one hundred percent on the truth of that but either way that's a long track to receive radio air-play right?
Of course, as always there's those who don't like the song and hated it so badly that it was deemed one of the 50 worst songs of all time...Hmm, I'd say 90% of music from right now should be on that list, but that's the beauty of each of us having the right to an opinion, and to like what we like with impunity.
Anyway, that's my random track of the week and a little insight into my liked songs playlist. Maybe next week I'll get back to sharing my most played or maybe not...Either way let me know what you've been listening to in the comments below.
