Backyard Bumblebees
I really like bees! And bees are very important pollinators too. Without bees a lot of the plants and trees won't reproduce anymore.
And it's not going well with the bees nowadays. By the use of pesticides and non-native enemies like the hornet we've seen the number of bees significantly being reduced in the past few years.
Also a lot of people nowadays have their backyards fully paved.
But not me... I reserved a lot of space for flowering plants and flowers to help my little flying friends. And to pay me back, I can have a photoshoot with them every now and then ๐
I've recently bought a lot of these nice purple Salvia plants. They also come in pink by the way. These flowers were advertised as bee-magnets... and that's very true!
Since I've placed some pots with Salvia in my backyard, the number of bees increased. Here you can see one of the cute, furry bumblebees on the pink Salvia.
The salvia looks very nice up close as well.
It's cool to see the bees flying from flower to flower to collect nectar and pollen in their pouches on their legs.
Apart from the Salvia I've planted some more colorful flowers to attract the bees.
It's quite hard to get a sharp photo of the bees because they are constantly moving. It's a matter of shooting a lot of photos and a bit of luck. My macro setup has a very short depth of field. On the next photo a large part of the bumblebee is unsharp, but you can see the nice details on its wings in this shot.
I liked this shot because the bumblebee seems to be peeking around the corner. And it's nice to see the vague silhouettes of the salvia in the background.
I hope you enjoyed my bumblebee photo shoot.
