Exploring a Bold New Drawing Style: My First Step into Caricature Portraiture

Art is an ever-evolving journey, and today, I embarked on a fresh creative path—caricature portraiture. This piece marks the beginning of an experimental series where I exaggerate facial features while retaining expressive realism.

Breaking Away from Realism

For years, I have focused on contemporary portraiture, ensuring balance and proportion in my drawings. However, in this new style, I intentionally distort features—such as enlarging lips, sharpening brows, or amplifying facial contours—to create a compelling fusion of reality and artistic exaggeration.

The sketch above captures that essence, blending charcoal’s rich textures with dynamic shading. The subject’s pronounced lips, thick brows, and braided hair create a striking contrast that draws attention to expression and personality rather than perfect symmetry.

What Inspired This Transition?

I have always admired how caricatures can communicate emotion, humor, and personality in a way that traditional portraits sometimes cannot. Inspired by both classic caricaturists and expressive contemporary artists, I decided to push my creative limits.

The Artistic Process

1. Observation – I analyzed facial structures and pinpointed key features that define a person’s look.
2. Exaggeration – Instead of adhering to standard proportions, I amplified distinct characteristics.
3. Expressive Shading – Using charcoal, I played with contrast, depth, and texture, ensuring the drawing remained visually engaging despite the distortions.

What’s Next?

This is just the beginning! I plan to refine this approach, integrating color, movement, and even surreal elements into future pieces. This new journey is about freedom in expression, echoing the core philosophy of Jaskara—the art movement I co-founded.
