ARABESQUE
ARABESQUE
A type of ornament that appeared in Islamic art where nothing living could be depicted. In the European tradition, the arabesque reflects the idea of repetition, turning towards oneself, or interweaving. To a certain extent, the idea correlates with Celtic-Germanic ornamentalism, Irish art and Viking art (of course, given the significant differences between them). In Norwegian art, weaving does not adhere to special canons (compared to the strict dogmatism of oriental arabesques, which sometimes take a round shape, forming something like a mandala). On the other hand, due to its intricate, sinuous form, the arabesque is associated (in literature) with the Grotesque.
