Our obsessions with identity are odd when we're each such a jumble of the same basic "stuff."
"...identifies as Afro-Cuban."
That's sociology for you isn't it. The Washington Post article about "Multiracial Whiteness" uses that kind of language.
You can identify as a race or ethnicity now? Are sociologists not allowed to be angry at Rachel Dolezal anymore because she identifies as black? If you call 911 because you're witnessing an armed robbery being committed by a 5'7", heavy set, white guy, do you need to tell the dispatcher that he might identify as a tall, athletic, black man?
According to Christina Beltran and far too many sociologists, yes, race is more about identity than genetics. If you're black, Arab, Hispanic, etc. and believe in individualism, you're really white. Namely, you're not really a person of color unless you behave in a way that sociologists tell you that you're supposed to behave and believe what they tell you you're supposed to believe.
"the politics of multiracial whiteness reinforces their desired approach to colorblind individualism."
Sociology in a nutshell.
I'm not so delusional to think that anybody is color blind (except for the actual condition of color blindness). But, how is it not desirable to strive for a world wherein the color of a person's skin is as uninteresting as eye or hair color? How is it not desirable to live in a world wherein we judge people by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin? I kinda feel like I'm referring to somebody important here.
Academia and the KKK aren't at odds with the Bidenism "If you don't vote for me, you ain't black." They don't clash on the idea that punctuality and professionalism are white traits--that was displayed in the fucking Smithsonian.
There are racists on the left and the right; but, we need to stop pretending that there's a difference between leftist racism and rightist racism. It's all collectivism. It's all identity politics. It's all anti-individualism.
The only difference is that the KKK is hated by just about everybody who isn't a member while academic, leftist racists are being printed in the Washington Post and being listened to in colleges all over the world.
This isn't a normalization of an alternative racism to David Duke. It's a normalization of David Duke. It's putting KKK rhetoric into the Smithsonian.
You wanna punch a Nazi? Look in the fucking mirror.
