Jeff Saturday is a bad decision with long-term ramifications.
There's a lot being said about the Colts hiring Jeff Saturday as their interim head coach, what it says about the NFL in general, and what are the Colts actually doing.
The thing is, I think that the answers are generally simple. I don't think that this says much about the NFL in general. There may only be 32 teams and even fewer owners - it's an exclusive club - but that doesn't mean that Terry Pegula is guilty of Dan Snyder's iniquities.
As for the Colts, again, it's pretty clear. They know that they suck, and they wanna suck their way to the first overall pick. Jeff Saturday was a legend of a player with the Colts for more than a decade. They're thinking that Saturday might be the worst coaching hire possible from a football standpoint; so, they can achieve the goal of losing out the season, while they might be able to sell a few tickets to some Colts fans who are nostalgic about Saturday's playing career.
The boneheaded factor in this move is that no coach with options is going to take an assistant role with the organization anymore - at least not until the team is sold or Jim Irsay dies. A head coach being fired is the juiciest opportunity that coordinators have to move up to a head coaching job. It's the ultimate job interview because you actually get to do the job and show the world how you handle it.
So, every on the Colts' coaching staff is getting screwed out of the opportunity that they've been working to earn.
People notice that.
If Nathaniel Hackett gets fired by the Broncos in the near future (which seems plausible), and he starts looking for an offensive coordinator job (which we know that he can do), the only way he'd take a job with the Colts is if no other team gave him an offer. If Hackett or McDaniels get fired, taking a coordinator position and hoping for a shot at an interim head coaching spot is basically the last chance that they have to ever get another head coaching job. Do you think somebody with a reputation like Eric Bieniemy is gonna take a job with the Colts after this decision? I don't.
