Why I’d Swap Typing for Public Speaking #241

Hello Beautiful Ladies of Hive, Eid Mubarak to our Muslim brothers and sisters! I hope everyone is doing well and staying in high spirits.

This week’s contest is all about the skills we wish to master and the ones we’d gladly forget. I’ll be sharing my thoughts based on ICT devices, especially laptops and desktops. For me, the skill I’d love to instantly master is public speaking. I’ve always admired people who can confidently speak in front of large crowds and clearly pass across their message. It’s a powerful skill that I believe would help me become a better teacher, express my ideas effectively, and lead others with confidence.

I first started building my public speaking skills during my final year project defense in school. That was my first time speaking in front of a crowd made up of fellow students and lecturers. At first, it was tough, I found myself stammering, which I normally don’t do. I struggled to grab attention. But then, I stopped focusing on individual faces and started looking at the crowd as a whole. That small change helped me relax and communicate my points more clearly.

On the other hand, the one skill I wouldn’t mind letting go of is my typing skill. I’ve been able to type very fast, probably because I was introduced to computers at an early age. I learned to type using Mavis Beacon, which was my favorite program every time I returned to school.

I especially enjoyed the typing games, my favorite was the car race game where you had to type quickly to catch up with your opponent. It made learning fun and helped me master typing fast. However, I wouldn’t mind forgetting that skill now, because technology has advanced so much. These days, computers are designed to reduce typing stress. With features like voice typing, you can simply speak, and your words will be typed automatically. Since technology is evolving rapidly, typing by hand is slowly becoming less necessary and honestly, it can sometimes be tiring on the fingers.

On the other hand, public speaking has the power to connect me with audiences and open doors of opportunity to meet different kinds of people from various backgrounds. It builds confidence, boosts leadership skills, and creates room for meaningful conversations. For this reason, if I were to trade one skill for another, I would gladly give up my typing skills in exchange for mastering public speaking because of the greater impact and long-term benefits it offers.

These days, no one really cares how fast you can type, especially during job interviews or employment sessions. Most companies already have prepared templates and digital tools that make typing less important. You’re not expected to start everything from scratch anymore, and speed typing isn’t always a priority.
