Microcosm in El Roble//Microcosmo en El Roble (ENG-ESP)

To the untrained eye, the ecosystem of the El Roble oxidation pond in Guanabacoa, Cuba, might not look like much. Surrounding this pond—which, despite being man-made, has developed its own biodiversity—the landscape was dominated by lush shrubs before the deforestation carried out by local farmers in early May. However, the grass that was the primary goal is already beginning to emerge; it feeds not only the livestock but also a group of living beings that commonly go unnoticed.
​This habitat plays host to a series of animal species that are both beautiful and beneficial to the ecosystem. Based on my own hypothesis (though still without concrete evidence), these species have specialized to the specific conditions of their environment. Among them are the moth caterpillar (the "little hairy one"); the bean ladybug (the one that seems to be scowling at me from the green leaf); and the Milkweed Assassin Bug nymph, which resembles a spider and seems to keep watch over everything. It is, in fact, the ecosystem's police force.

Para el ojo inexperto, el ecosistema de la laguna de oxidación de El Roble, en Guanabacoa, Cuba no parece gran cosa. Alrededor de esta laguna, que aunque artificial, ha creado su propia biodiversidad, el paisaje estaba dominado por frondosos arbustos antes de la deforestación de principios de mayo realizada por los campesinos locales. Sin embargo, ya comienza a verse el pasto que era el objetivo principal; este no solo alimenta al ganado, sino también un grupo de seres vivos que comúnmente pasan desapercibidos.

Este hábitat alberga una serie de especies animales bellas y beneficiosas para el ecosistema. Según mi suposición (aún sin evidencia), estas se han especializado en las condiciones donde viven. Entre ellas se encuentran la oruga de polilla (la peludita); la mariquita de los frijoles (la que parece mirarme con mala cara sobre la hoja verde); y la ninfa de Chinche asesino del algodoncillo, la que se asemeja a una araña y parece vigilarlo todo. Es, de hecho, la policía del ecosistema.
