Candid Journal Entry #10: Back to Work
A while back, I mentioned how things could get worse as we draw nearer to the end of April. Well, looks like the numbers are still stable, but the state has yet to seen stats on recoveries. Like I said before, estimated recoveries are somewhat pointless. What is important is to see hospitalized patients bouncing back.
As the state website shows, Utah hasn't even tested over 100K persons with symptoms yet. It does put more questions into the notion of opening up commerce again. Granted, the state would likely take a cautious approach. Even now, some elective surgeries are coming back.
This could mean that work at my department may be picking up again soon. It would be interesting to see the difference in volume of work when things resume. For that purpose, the state released a statement.
What are elective surgeries?
Most people would think something along the lines of cosmetic surgeries. They would be correct. However, all cosmetic surgeries are elective, but not all elective surgeries are cosmetic. Head over to John Hopkins University's page, you could see their explanation.
Wikipedia adds more examples of types of elective surgeries.
As it turns out, urgency is the deciding factor. If there's time to wait, then it is elective. When you see it that way, then resuming some elective surgeries seem less selfish.
It's not only about money, but restoring some livelihood. It's also to alleviate the ailments people are facing right now. You know, actually treating the patients? Their lives may not be in immediate danger, but imagine living in pain for weeks because you need to stay home.
Regardless of the speed to resume daily lives, it will not be the same again. Nations will have to face pending economic crises and well as social unrest that follow. As much as people are hopeful about a smooth and peaceful transition into the new norms, I have my doubts. A part of me believes that more volatility and danger are in store for our future.
Yeah, crypto may rise as people realize the folly of our current system. But, at what cost? We shall wait and see.
