Bear Mountain Hike -- Actifit Report Card: October 23 + 24, 2024
This week has been a lot, leading up to our 6th grade field trip, a hike up Bear Mountain with nearly 100 students. And I got home so tired from the trip that I forgot to get in my actifit report for Wednesday. To be fair, it was another run of the mill kinda day at school, and I got 12342 steps in.
There was nothing ordinary about Thursday, though. We had phenomenal weather for early fall, low 60F temps, clear skies, and gorgeous autumn colors dotting the popular upstate hiking destination.
We arrived on schedule and split up into 10 groups so we could group students with similar hiking abilities. The full loop covers nearly 4 miles and rises about 1000 feet from the trailhead.
The trip continues to be a right of passage for our 6th graders each year as we work towards one of our school values of embracing challenge. There were dozens of students who had never been out for a mountain hike before, so getting them out of the city on this picturesque day was the perfect first taste.
I was so proud of this guy; he was one of those students that had never hiked before and he was dead set about not going. I called home the night before and spoke to mom, who wanted him to go on the trip. She put him on speakerphone and the three of us talked about his concerns. Turns out he didn't want to fall off the mountain, so I assured him the path was safe and I wouldn't let him fall.
All in all, pretty solid numbers from the trip. I managed over 10 miles on the day for 25K+. Throw in the 1000 feet of elevation and the extra backpacks I helped some of my students with, and I got quite the workout. So much so, all I could manage to do when I got home was gobble down a quick dinner before I hit the sack.
