Seamless Symmetry
Making the pattern
After making the symmetrical mandala on my last post, I decided I wanted to make it a seamless pattern that I could copy indefinitely to fill any area I wished. This ended up being a little harder than I expected, not because it's hard to make, but because I hadn't done it in a proper way since the beginning. You see, the problem with making seamless images to create an indefinite pattern, is that the edges of the images must fit perfectly with the next. Unfortunately, the image wasn't 100% perfectly symmetrical, so the edges didn't match.
How I tried to make the seamless image
I made a simple background with lines moving outward from the center. I the created smaller copies with a little less details than the original mandala I had already made, placing one copy on each corner.
This was my first attempt. I thought it would be that simple, but when I tried making the copies on the side, this happened.
This actually doesn't look that bad. You can see the line in the center of the image, which you don't really want when making a seamless pattern. My perfectionism comes into play, which is not always a good thing. But you will see why it was a good thing in the next example.
A 45 Degree Twist
I decided to try turning the image 45 degrees to create a similar - yet different - pattern. This is when I ran into more problems... as you can see, the mismatching edges became a problem when I tried to cut the image to create the seamless pattern. Think about it, when filling a whole background with this pattern, the mistake would repeat itself over and over. This was a no no for me.
The Remedy
The remedy seemed simple - or so I thought. I cut the image at the start of the post, which is a quarter of the image I had created.
Unfortunately, that didn't work
The problem was that I hadn't created accurate copies of the original image. Even worse, the supposedly symmetrical sides, weren't really symmetrical! HAH!
So I cut 1/8th of the image to get that accuracy! I then went ahead and fixed the little details that weren't symmetrical in that angle (on ovals).
Having created that perfect 4th by making that perfect symmetrical 8th, I finally finished that seamless image which allowed me to make this beautiful background filler which I found are called Tesselations .

Last but not least, I created a couple of extra-colored tesseled images since I like experimenting with different color palettes.
