Digidesign C-24 digital audio ProTools console
Currently have one of these beasts in bits. My friend and fellow audio engineer Terry Jackson from Six Strings Studio in Beerwah, Queensland Australia has enlisted my help in cleaning up some acidic residue on the printed circuit boards. Apparently this is due to a manufacturing failure to clean/rinse the boards after assembly and soldering.
A fault found on more than a few consoles, the offending residue eventually attacks copper on components and the board, resulting in bizarre faults such as spurious button shorts and bus problems.
We have to replace many ribbon cable connectors and their corresponding headers. The joy of desoldering. Disappointing for such as expensive piece of kit. Thankfully we can still record by using Protools directly on the Macintosh.
Notice the residue on the connector headers at the bottom of this board:
