Lisbon postcards: On the roof of Rua Augusta Arch
Rua Augusta Arch is one of the landmarks of Lisbon. The monumental gate at the entrance to the city from Trade Square was made as a sign of commemoration after the great reconstruction of the city. Lisbon was practically completely destroyed in 1755 by an earthquake and subsequent fire. The city is like a phoenix, made from the ashes of old Lisbon. Rua Augusta Arch was completed in 1873, more than a century after this terrible tragedy.
