The second name for dyscalculia is a specific disorder of numeracy skills. In most cases, the disorder is not a symptom of any mental disorder, but an independent problem.
Types of dyscalculia:
- Verbal dyscalculia. It is the difficulty in naming mathematical quantities, numbers, terms, symbols and relationships.
- Practognostic dyscalculia. ...
- Lexical dyscalculia. ...
- Graphic dyscalculia. ...
- Ideodiagnostic dyscalculia. ...
- Operational dyscalculia.
Dyscalculia is a congenital disorder, that is, it has a genetic component. Usually, one of the parents of a child with a disc also has a hard time learning math.
The symptoms of dyscalculia can be grouped into the following:
Errors when naming numbers.
Memorize the order of the numbers without understanding their meaning.
Difficulties in determining the place of a number among other numbers.
Insufficient knowledge of mathematical terminology.
Difficulties in breaking down a number in terms.
Inability to distribute numbers according to the pattern of more or less.
Errors in the spelling of numbers.
Performing only elementary arithmetic operations, and exclusively by manual counting.
Thought processes are extremely specific, tasks are perceived only if there is an objective condition.
Difficulty in performing sequential arithmetic operations.
Significant difficulties or total impossibility of carrying out actions with complex numbers.
Dyscalculia correction
The most effective intervention for dyscalculia is early diagnosis. The sooner we identify the problem and provide children with the tools to adapt to learning, the more likely they are to avoid problems of academic failure, low self-esteem, or more serious deficiencies.
Dyscalculia in many cases is an independent disease and not a side effect of any other defect. It can be very selective, that is, a person with a pathological disability for numeracy can be completely normal in all other respects.
